Chocolate mug cake

Low in calories, fudgy and full of protein is what this mug cake is all about!

With the famous cacao powder that gives us this chocolate flavour here are a few interesting things!

What are the health benefits of raw cacao powder?

It’s antioxidant-packed: Twice the antioxidants of red wine – sorry everyone, that gig is up – and three times that of green tea, raw cacao powder is exceptionally high in flavonoids (antioxidant activity). The flavonoids in raw cacao have been linked with heart health benefits, including increasing good cholesterol (HDL) and lowering blood pressure.

It’s high in magnesium: Raw cacao is one of the best plant-based food sources of magnesium. Magnesium is essential for many biochemical reactions in the body, including protein synthesis, muscle and nerve function, blood glucose control, and blood pressure regulation.

It’s sulfur-rich: The sulfur found in cacao may help ease the effects of several skin disorders, including acne, psoriasis, warts, dandruff and eczema. It is also associated with strong nails, shiny hair and overall liver and pancreatic health.

It can help weight control: Raw cacao is not only a healthier alternative to processed chocolate but drinking a cup of hot cacao before meals may reduce your appetite by helping you better attune to your body’s hunger signals. This is said to be because of the monoamine oxidase enzyme inhibitors (or MAO inhibitors for short) found in cacao, which are linked to weight loss and maintenance.

What are the side effects of cacao powder?

Cacao is very powerful on the central nervous system and eating large quantities can interfere with calcium retention. Don’t consume more than 40 grams (or four to six heaped teaspoons) of raw cacao a day.
